Nose: Now that’s what you call a Sherry monster! A blast of prunes, orange oil, espresso, chocolate. Clean and complex with multi-layers of dried fruit, nuttiness and spices with some marzipan and vanilla touches to it as well.
Palate: Thick like treacle. Gorgeous mouthfeel, if only silk was edible! Follows the nose note to note. It was Christmas all over again. Drams like these should not be dissected. They are simply too complex for words. Just sit back and enjoy this masterpiece.
Finish: Not just long but smooth.
What some of our whisky enthusiast friends have said about Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask
Quote 1 “An unusual whisky, not for beginners I’d say. To call it a sherry monster is an understatement. Needs a good dose of water and 20 minutes in the glass. First taste was too overpowering and busy but eventually it blossomed nicely. Funky, fermented tropical fruits such as lychee, mango pineapple, a lot of licorice, raisin, cinnamon, almost fizzy on the finish. Bizarre, utterly delicious. It’s a shame this serious carries such a high premium but it is something special and different and personally I prefer it to any Japanese whisky I’ve tasted.”
Quote 2 “It’s stunning….great cakey, sweet drinking chocolate on the nose, very sweet, black treacle and something green or a tinge of rubber (!?) mixed with sweet sugary treacle, a tad vanilla. It’s very distinctive but so good. Much the same tasting, massive sherry bomb (no bigger one) , porty richness, sweet, thick and fruity, finish is long and powerful with a good amount of liquorice. Totally agree once you hit this it’s going to overpower a lot of others and I can understand why some may find this quite powerful and different. It’s a monster with cheese, especially a good parmesan. Easy 5 stars. ”
