Description

Dalmore Cigar Malt was discontinued in mid-2009, causing uproar among all right-thinking, cigar-smoking whisky fans. This dram used to sit above the 12, and below the 15 in terms of both the price-point, and the age-profiles of the whisky that went into the blend, but the new version is a little different.

The whiskies that make up the reworked cigar malt are slightly older, which has pushed up the price somewhat.

But it’s a great whisky, whether you drink with its intended purpose in mind or not. And if you do enjoy cigars, you’ll want to know that the stick that provided the flavour benchmark for pairing is the hefty Partagas Serie D No. 4.

Tasting Notes

Nose:  Caramel, shortbread, biscuits, coffee and chocolates. Simple, clean and moreish.

Palate:  Yet more toffee, caramel edging towards the burnt cinder-toffee side of things. Flamed orange-zest, and perfectly integrated sherry.

Finish:  Reasonably simple, Christingles (orange Zest and clove with a touch of cinnamon), more mid-palate than palate-coating.

Overall:  Definitely meets the criteria of pairing with a ‘BIG’ cigar.

What some of our whisky enthusiast friends have said about Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve

Quote 1 “Touch of the Islay’s about it. Sweet, tangy and tart, but with a underlying gentle Highlands taste. Exceptionally smooth, so there is quality distillation happening here and careful ageing in good casks. Overtly coloured, but this is probably how the punters like it. Strong, dark, flavourful and smoky. At 44% abv, with its inherent provenance securely intact, water or ice added only detracts from the magnificent pleasure of letting this Whisky sit for at least 15 mins to open up. Then enjoy neat in its intended form.”

Quote 2 “I don’t smoke cigars but I really enjoy this single malt. It has a profile that is very much Dalmore, but is distinctly different from the 15 yr or 18 yr expressions or King Alexander III. Amazing nose with hints of leather, tobacco leaves, and fine sherried oak. Cabernet savignon finnishing really adds an extra layer of luxury to the nose. The palate is full and luxurious with chocolate, dried fruit, sherried oak (but the sweetness is mild, barley-driven). The finish is long and warm with more chocolate, dried fruit, and the pleasant dried, deep oak. “
